Brazil opens largest oncology center in Latin American public


The cancer center will become a “world reference” in the treatment of cancer to gather in one hospital all treatment phases, ranging from diagnosis to complete rehabilitation.

The Brazilian government launched the largest public center for cancer treatment in Latin America, operated by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sao Paulo (USP), the largest South American country.

The Cancer Institute of Sao Paulo Octavio Frias de Oliveira was opened and by local authorities, headed by Vice President Jose Alencar, and will open its doors on Wednesday to the public.

The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, USP, Marcos Boulos, said the cancer center will become a “world reference” in the treatment of cancer, bringing together in the same hospital all treatment phases, ranging from diagnosis to complete rehabilitation.

In the first phase, a phase of adaptation to be completed in mid 2009, the center will serve the 4,000 patients treated at the Hospital das Clinicas, largest hospital in the country.

The center also will advance research to reduce the presence of the disease that each year 101,000 new cases registered in the state of Sao Paulo, with 35,000 in the eponymous capital.

Work began in 1987 and stopped in 1994, were resumed in 1999 and suspended again that year, returning in 2003 with a final investment of 270 million reals (U.S. $ 162.6 million) at that stage.

The annual operating cost is provided by the entity of 190 million reals ($ 114.4 million).
