Hereditary predisposition to cancer
In hereditary cancer, every body cell (somatic + germline) in the person’s body has a mutation in some highly penetrant gene (e.g. BRCA1 or 2). Because we inherit two copies of genes (or alleles) on separate chromosomes from our parents, the second copy usually is normal. But people who have inherited a constitutional germline mutation in tumor suppressor genes are one step closer to cancer than those who haven’t, because they generally follow the Knudson ‘two-hit hypothesis” and need inactivation of a second gene copy for cancer to develop. So, these persons are “one step closer to cancer” and the term hereditary cancer is mostly applied when we know the responsible gene, which Read the rest of this entry »

Too much folic acid may increase the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women
For the study in 1992, Stevens studied the relationship of nutrition in relation to folic acid, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12, methionine, and alcohol with the risk of breast cancer for a total of 70 656 postmenopausal women. During the follow-ups between 1992 and June 2005 were 3898 cases of breast cancer. In the postmenopausal women with the highest quintile of folate-containing diet hit the suspect with a probability of 12 percent. The risk was also tested and not by other nutrients, such as alcohol, changed. Furthermore, no effect trends were seen in the dose. Read the rest of this entry »
Olive oil may reduce the risk of cancer, according to study
Because fat does not equal fat. Trans fat, an artificially produced fat, have been identified in several medical tests and scientific studies as a carcinogenic substance. The results were so clear that several U.S. states have banned the use of trans fats. But saturated fats seem to have a carcinogenic effect when they are fed in high amounts. Despite this, one suspected in unsaturated fats (olive oil) and omega-3 fatty acids (eg fish and canola oil) have a preventive effect. Read the rest of this entry »
