What’s new in the research of melanoma skin cancer

Recent studies suggest there may be two ways in which exposure to ultraviolet (UV) causes melanoma. The first form is associated with excessive exposure and sunburn during childhood or adolescence. This early exposure to the sun initiates a change in skin cells that could turn into melanoma over time. Some doctors believe that this is responsible for the melanomas that occur in the legs and torso areas that are not often exposed to sunlight during adulthood.

The second form is associated with the melanomas that begin in the arms, neck and face. These areas are very exposed to sun, particularly in the case of men. Tanning booths may also contribute to the formation of any of these melanomas. Read the rest of this entry »

Search a new treatment for breast cancer

The investigation arose from a clinical need, explained Amanas Padilla, director of research, told Dicey. “There is a subgroup of patients with breast cancer with high expression of a protein called HER2. These patients are treated with a drug called Perception. However, this treatment is effective only in a certain percentage of patients who have over expression of HER2, so not all patients respond well, “he says. In addition, relapses occur frequently, ie, the disease recurs, so that the effectiveness of the drug is very low.

Therefore, the research group Padilla decided to try a combination of Perception with new-generation drugs to find a more satisfying. “We tested a list of more than 20 drugs and all of them, gave a good result Destiny, which is approved for leukemia and chronic amyloidal. When combined with Perception makes the ant tumor effect is much stronger than the individual effect of each of the drugs, “he says. Read the rest of this entry »

Nanoparticles for cancer diagnosis and therapy

Magnetic Nan particles are able to do both diagnosis and therapy, identifying the individual tumor cells: is the perspective ‘theranostics’ disclosed by a joint research of the University of Milan, Pavia and Saragossa presented today in Rome at the tenth International Conference on Nanostructure Materials (Nano 2010) of which he is chairman Dino Fiorani, director of the Institute of Physics and Astronomy of the National Research Council (CNR-ISM), along with Elizabeth Agostinelli, a researcher at CNR-ISM, and Enrico Traversa, University of Tor Vergata.
